Music has the remarkable power to paint vivid images in our imagination, and Pictures in Music explores that connection between sound and visual storytelling.

The program opens with Carlos Simon’s The Block, a vibrant and rhythmic work that captures the energy and spirit of everyday life in a New York neighborhood. With driving percussion and colorful orchestration, Simon creates a musical snapshot of community and culture.

Acclaimed violinist Tien-Hsin Cindy Wu joins the Missoula Symphony for Korngold’s lush and cinematic Violin Concerto in D Major. Written by the famed Hollywood film composer, the concerto is filled with sweeping melodies, dazzling virtuosity, and rich romantic textures.

The concert concludes with Mussorgsky’s monumental Pictures at an Exhibition. Inspired by a gallery of paintings, this beloved masterpiece transforms visual art into a breathtaking orchestral journey.

A note from the Artistic Director, Paul Watkins:

“In imagining our 28th season, I was inspired by a T.S. Eliot poem, “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock.” I gave particular attention to these lines:

Time for you and time for me
And time yet for a hundred indecisions
And for a hundred visions and revisions
Before the taking of a toast and tea.

 

 

Over our 27-year evolution, the Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival  always celebrated the past by pushing toward the future. I hope that is evident in the planned 2021 Festival programming, where we explore how the work of old masters inspires future generations of performers and composers.

Just as we look back for inspiration, we look forward with creativity. In support of great music, this year’s Festival presents a new visual image that recognizes our successes while embracing our future. Our logo has evolved, and we are celebrating our vibrant city by featuring the work of a beloved Detroit visual artist, Allie McGhee.

In his piece above, called “Ring a Ding,” McGhee contemplates the ellipse of human evolution, and – in his way – explores how symbols draw us into art and move us along. It’s the same path for music, a journey that will inspire our performers, and hopefully our audiences, in 2021.

Together we’ll share great concerts and hopefully in the end, take our toast and tea.”

Chamber Music Sedona

This program is ravishingly beautiful. You will be treated to American Haiku by composer/cellist, Paul Wiancko. He will perform his own composition with his partner, violist, Ayane Kozasa who commissioned the work from him.  Then the only thing better than one cello is….? Indulge yourselves in two of the most revered compositions featuring two cellos, Arensky’s Quartet #2 and Schubert’s beloved Quintet in C major. Returning to Musikiwest will be violinists Siwoo Kim and Tien-Hsin Cindy Wu, violist, Ayane Kozasa and joining me on cello and making his first appearance with us is my dear colleague, Paul Wiancko.

Moab Music Festival: Winterlude

House Benefit Concert

Join us for this new Winterlude event - an intimate concert in one of Moab's most distinguished private homes. This concert features music by  Schumann, Moravec, Fauré, Mozart, and Guastavino for strings, piano and voice. A Winterlude Musical Story Hour Special Event

Saturday, February 8, 10:30 am • Star Hall, 159 E Center St            This event is FREE to all ages.

Musical Story Hour moves to Star Hall for this special Winterlude event. Festival artists share Jean de Brunhoff's classic French children's book The Story of Babar the Little Elephant  told in English, set to music by Francis Poulenc. Large screen projections of Laurent de Brunhoff 's  original  illustrations provide the charming backdrop. Children are encouraged to wear their favorite elephant pajamas/costumes, and/or bring their stuffed elephant friends!

This event is produced in conjunction with the Grand County Public Library.

Salon Séance for Benjamin Britten at Crypt Sessions

On December 4, 2019, Benjamin Britten will have officially been dead for 43 years. On the anniversary of his death, the performers of this program will summon the spirit of the composer via a carefully-crafted program, tracing his life through a series of musical movements mixed with read letters and reflections. At the heart of the narrative is Britten’s relationship with poet W.H. Auden, and their struggle to find an answer to a question that remains ever-more relevant in our present day: ‘How can we live in a broken world?’
